Get your own Blog Theme!

How many times have you visited a blog just to be put off by their theme?

What was wrong with their theme?

Oh! Its the same old theme I’ve seen on so many other websites. Yes! Isn’t this true. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of free WordPress themes available for download. Many of them are really awesome, but the better they look, the more they are being used by other bloggers as well.

I realized this very early on when I started this blog. Infact, the current theme that I’m using is the 4th on this blog. The first three were ‘free’ themes that were good, but soon enough I realized there were enough and more blogs out there that used the same theme.

If you’re serious about building a reader base, you will need to differentiate your blog, not only by the content you offer, but by its visual appeal as well.

Either come up with your own theme or hire someone who can come up with one. I’m sure my theme is not the best one around, but at least its unique and that counts. With its all white look, I’ve received a fair bit of compliments on at least trying to look different from the rest. Not to forget, the traffic increased a bit as well.

Try getting a unique theme for your blog. It does help in standing out from the crowd, and in building a better reader community for your blog.

I have gone though the mill trying to find a theme that fit me. I don’t have the time or the inclination to learn the coding. However, I do agree that the theme is important. It can mark you as someone who is serious about what they are doing or someone who isn’t worth sticking around to see what’s on the blog.

    Great post!

For those who do not know to make themes, $1 custom themes seem the best bet.

I went through 19 themes in 2 months, before finally making a theme of my own, on this blog.

Yeah I totally agree with the above, but there are sooo many people out there who don’t want to pay for anything! It’s mainly those who aren’t into making money online and just want to put up a blog for the sake of putting up a blog.

I think readability goes a long way too – I think too many people try to design their own layouts when they shouldn’t; and the result is a really ugly, chaotic looking blog where color schemes do not match and where animations/pictures/etc. are just totally out of place.

Personally I would take a clean, simple, concise blog over one that has someone trying to “show me how creative they are” any day.

Besides, I think a great deal of the reader base eventually consumes the feed through RSS anyway.

In my opinion, simplicity is the key.

I want to make my own themes, but because I’m not the expert of site programming nor blog designer, so I just change the banner. Banner really makes sense! At least it is your site’s face.

I totally agree with you but i do not know anything about making a new theme!

Well I am not sure if I should agree or not. I have arguments for both.

Take a look at MattCutts.com – lots of traffic, high PR and he’s using the good old Almost-Spring.

Now I do know a unique design however may keep the visitor on the site.

Yeah, themes separate out the blogs that get up dated regularly compared to blogs that are semi-stale with less interesting material to read.

I didn’t pay for a theme, but I did take the time to tweak the CSS from a theme I liked so that the look would feel more like my own. Sooner or later I’ll pop for a quality designer, but I feel like my blog has enough of a “look” to be distinctive.

I ended up tweaking mine — over and over — until I was happy and it suited me.

I must say I hate blogs that are not well designed. I usually don’t like to return to those sites. I hate template sites that I know, its another turnoff.
